Welcome back to a Ten Vibes edition of The Vibes. We last left each other at a Met Gala recap so if you weren’t there for that, read it here.

Good afternoon!
The grey skies are making everything a little more subdued, including my energy putting together this intro. These Vibes feel pretty representative in regards to the things I have been focussing my tiny brain on in the past month so here goes—
Set the mood with this playlist by Matthew Perpetua called Typing Will Never Be The Same Again, “inspired by this woman typing by a window in a Canon Typestar 110 ad from the late 80s.”
Perpetua was recently interviewed by Daisy Alioto for Dirt and while I am famously generally anti-playlist, something about the specific Vibe of this one spoke to me and I was not let down. This playlist comprises of the exact music I want to be put together in a playlist (the playlist being a conduit for mood or Vibes in the literal sense, a passive rather than active listening experience)— slightly dreamy, melodic guitar-based tunes that keeps the listener at a distance and should be played at dinner parties. (Apple Music Link)
Regrettably haven’t stopped thinking about Jake Gyllenhaal in this white suit at Venice Film Festival.
just a great suit ! (source)

Anything written about kitchens. In The Third Ten Vibes, I shared this piece from Dayna Tortorici on SSENSE, which is always worth a revisit, but I recently read this newsletter from Tyler Watamanuk where he wrote specifically about Joan Didion’s California kitchen (seen in header image) and it was so good. In the piece he writes about a set of photographs from a 70s edition of Vogue and the contrast they seem to have against the coldness of Didion’s writing voice.
one of the photos featured 🔆 (source) Feeling very Antoni here but for real a kitchen is something that can be so personal!! And when writers Get That there’s nothing better!
Also! Should be noted that Watamanuk is responsible for some other great pieces of writing: this piece about Mike Mills’ films’ interiors—The Autofictional Interiors of Filmmaker Mike Mills—this piece from GQ—Menswear Has Finally Caught Up to the Muppets (!)—and also this piece of autofiction—Will Buying These Expensive Pants Change My Life?—which seems to reflect my exact thoughts but better.
My current worst habit, in a similar vein to my Wikipedia love, is going on long YouTube deep dives into Oscar wins. But the thing is, sometimes I won’t even watch the speeches (there are, of course, obvious exceptions) I just love the whole pre-talking procedure. When they announce all the nominees, you see which ones clap, which ones make a show out of it, which ones are annoyingly not playing the game.
Then (did u know this!?) they announce the winner (!) and you see the five boxes, the reactions when one person wins and the others are either genuinely happy or reacting to a shock win (would rec seeing the other directors as Bong Joon Ho won in 2020).
And then! The walk to the stage! You see who will get hugged and who they just walk past! And sometimes who they go back to handshake or hug after passing! I love it so much!! These are people who perform for a living and they’re still performing here but we pretend they aren’t! I mean some of them really aren’t but it’s all a game! Pure good Vibes here as long as you don’t watch the bad people win or think about the Hollywood System too much.
God wouldn’t you just give anything to own this near 1000 dollar tablecloth embroidered by hand with the vibe of a French version of the Italian dinner in Normal People?? (yes the bit where they meet up in Italy is forever imprinted on my brain)
This is one of those things that I get into my head that I Could Do but I know that the Vibes will be off the moment I try because I am simply not an Artist. I’ll just dream about getting very rich and owning one of these. If you want to know about my very limited creative endeavours— at the moment I am in a certain kind of hell trying to sew a silk shirt which is something I wouldn’t wish on even Timothee Chalamet (the first sworn enemy of The Vibes).
Fashion Week! Slowly absorbing more knowledge about fashion fashion, which really only means kind of putting some effort into figuring out what I like and don’t like as I flicked through all the fashion writers that I follow’s Instagram stories. My favourite discovery—and I touched on this in my Met Gala Vibes—was Connor McKnight, a New York-based designer who spent some time at Bode (💙) before starting his eponymous brand. Each look hits the perfect balance of appearing carefully put together while still seeming like it naturally fell together. Soft Hard Clothes you know? Apparently, his mission is to explore the Black mundane and create designs that don’t necessarily speak to the current moment but to every moment. This SS21 collection, in particular, was “interested in exploring narratives surrounding the Black family” Some of my favourite looks from the collection—
love the lsas moment ofc but also obsessed with the texture of the knit I watched the TV show Run recently and while I had some mixed feelings about the overall plot what cannot be denied is the chemistry that Domnhall Gleeson and Merrit Weaver have!! It’s crazy that they have not already become one of those actor duos that people cast in multiple projects (think Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling) purely based on chemistry alone!! Think that video of Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain that everyone went crazy about but for multiple episodes in a row (and if you’re curious, the still photo of the armpit kiss is Not As Hot— a classic case of the Ethan Hawke Only Hot In Motion effect). You watch something like Run and wonder where the chemistry has gone in Hollywood! Bring back chemistry!
p.s. Let it be known that actually I don’t think E.S. and R.G. have that much chemistry although I will admit that I kind of still like La La Land if only for that scene at the end, you know the one.
Goodness so much fashion in this issue!! Technically it’s still September so consider this The September Issue even though you can catch me saying these are October’s Ten Vibes in the last newsletter because I am a dummy. But I digress— the Emmys happened (I refuse to watch Ted Lasso + The Crown so really not a lot in the ceremony for me to get excited over) and I wanted to shout out 95% of Emma Corrin’s outfit by Miu Miu. I am famously anti gloves and especially anti fingerless gloves so that part of this look is a huge no for me. HOWEVER, I’m in love with the colour of the dress and the little bonnet is perfect! I want a quilted bucket hat in this exact colour!
if i could crop out the fingernails only u know i would!! (source) You ever feel like every edition of The Vibes should just be this picture of Ethan Hawke? I do!

And to continue that^ energy, I rewatched Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! a couple of days ago, having first seen it in cinemas when it came out in 2016 and maybe once or twice since then. This film walks the thinnest tightrope of being an all-caps BRO MOVIE or a bro!! movie and ends safely on the bro!! side of things. Genuinely, watching these baseball players in the 80s in their tiny shorts just trying to party and pick up girls was the most fun I’ve had watching a movie in a long time. To go off the chemistry Vibe— these guys just have charisma! Something else you don’t get a lot of these days, it really seems that Linklater knows how to pick 'em. By 'em I do mean Glen Powell who is in this movie and Ethan Hawke who is not.
Should be noted that all the actors in the cast have chemistry with each other and Linklater knows it!
Anyway, not sure what I’ll write about next edition so let’s all be surprised and proud of me if something lands in your inboxes in 2 weeks.
Until then catch me watching Everybody Wants Some!! on repeat and fully entering my Bro Era :)
