Welcome back to The Vibes, a glorified listicle. In the last newsletter I wrote about pop stars directing their own music videos, read that here. For it, I talked with FoTV Stella Farnan who now has a whole EP out! Listen to it here!

Good Morning!
I hope everyone is okay ane enjoying today’s weather despite the ongoing exhaustion. I’ve rewatched both Maggie’s Plan and Kicking and Screaming multiple times in the past couple of weeks if that gives you any indication of where I’m at. But today! Maybe I’ll watch one of them outside!
It’s probably no surprise to say that this Ten Vibes edition is a little less involved than others. I hope that’s okay.
September’s Ten Vibes incoming—
Eve Babitz’s book Eve’s Hollywood but more specifically the dedication section but more specifically this bit:
And to STRAWBERRIES and ASPARAGUS, the season is upon us.
And to Champagne and Easter.
And to the way the whipped cream comes in a silver gravy dish in the Polo Lounge when you order Irish Coffe. And the way the whipped cream comes in a silver cup at the Cafe Antico Greco on the Via della Croce in Rome when you order hot chocolate con panna (panna is whipped cream in Italian).
And to the Tartuffo con panna on the via Buffalo or the Piazzo Navona where you think at last you’re getting enough chocolate. And you might be.I also like the bit before where she thanks the Fords, the Harrisons not the Henrys.
I cannot fully endorse the Channing Tatum/Zoë Kravitz (potentially fake?) relationship entirely because of the Channing Tatum part of it (I don’t know what that man looks like!! Show me a picture of his face and I’d be like?? That’s Channing Tatum’s face??) However, all the pap shots of them in and around New York keep reminding me of the fact that Zoë Kravitz is very very cool. One of the coolest celebs. Even though she is a nepo baby and friends with Reese Witherspoon and posts Instagrams like this! In fact, all the completely uncool things she has done just seems to prove the point. Anyway, bring back the High Fidelity TV show!!
eternal outfit template (source) Anybody catch that new Lorde album? Heard much about it? I caught it! And I am its no. 1 defender! (I had to edit this post publish to include because I was alerted to the fact that this didn’t sound like an endorsement. It is a full endorsement!!)
I’ve finally pinned down that, despite beginning her career studying suburban life, Lorde’s music has transitioned to Rich People Vibes (a trunk full of Simone and Céline and of course! her magazines!). I’m here for it personally but can understand that it’s not what some people want. Though what else was she gonna do, you know?
Would recommend (as always) listening to the NY Times Popcast where they discussed the album and the reaction to it in a cultural sense and did not get bogged down in the Antonoff of it all (to anyone who will listen— “Dominoes” has what the Bleachers album wanted!)
The film that is known as either Freshman Year or by Shithouse. Directed and written by Cooper Raiff, who stars alongside Dylan Gelula, the film acts (for me) as another entry into the Sensitive Boy Open Shirt canon. I watched this as part of MIFF’s online program mostly because its synopsis compared it to Before Sunrise and, as we know, I am a sucker for marketing specifically aimed at me.
I have also been alerted (by me) to the fact that Cooper Raiff is co-writing and possibly directing a miniseries adaption of Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan, one of my favourite books of last year, which is quite exciting (I’m sorry). It is on Am*zon and starring Phoebe Dynevor but, as of now, C.R. (and, yes, the novel) is outweighing both those things. I’m shallow! What can I say!
Whole dried cranberries—complete different vibe to the normal ones, which I think are halved or deseeded or something. These seem vaguely more acidic (my favourite flavour profile) and have a much better bite to them. Made a great substitute for sour cherries in the Molly Baz miso cookie recipe from her Patreon.
Wikipedia. What a great service. I spend a lot of time just reading it— obviously flicking to the Personal Life section first. But I, strangely as this actor exists in the Noah Baumbach Cinematic Universe, had never seen this very fun story that went semi-viral (yuck) on Twitter about how Alan Alda met his wife of 54 years—
Personally, my favourite recent Wikipedia find (also vaguely N.B.C.U related) was coming across this award acceptance speech from Don Delillo which may be the coolest thing I’ve ever read someone saying—
If you are ever on the phone with me for longer than half an hour it is highly probable that I will end up looking at Wikipedia in some capacity, most likely something related to award shows, and boring you with that information.
In a vaguely similar energy— the inevitable moment when you are watching a New York based TV show or movie and Wallace Shawn appears for absolutely no reason. Marriage Story! Maggie’s Plan! Sex and The City! Gossip Girl! He’s there! Obviously, this feeling is enhanced if you have watched The Princess Bride multiple times throughout your life (let it be noted here that Rob Reiner directed Stand By Me, The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally consecutively! Thank you Wikipedia for letting me know!) and therefore feel some attachment to Wallace Shawn. It is even more enhanced if you have read his Wikipedia page and see that his partner Deborah Eisenberg is referred to as his longtime companion.
Balloon chairs by Seungjin Yang— this was very much the kind of thing you see and go Oh No I don’t like this but the more you stare at it and as I read this piece on SSENSE about them I became more and more into the design. I know I have a Chair Thing and I’m sorry!! But these are pretty cool! You can’t deny!
probably very uncomfortable but as i will probably never sit in these 12 thousand dollar chairs i don’t care! (source) Mike Mills has a new movie about family coming out called C’mon C’mon. Huge Vibe. I love Mike Mills’ films with my whole heart and this sounds really beautiful based on the synopsis out. This is probably not the last you’ll hear of this out of me.
same black + white tone as i am easy to find! more like i am easy to please! more like i am very sorry! (source) The genre of music often employed in Nora Ephron films where it’s just a man singing about a concept. Examples include “Remember” by Harry Nilsson—Remember, is a place from long ago//Remember, filled with everything you know— and “The Puppy Song” also by Harry Nilsson, “But dreams are nothin' more than wishes//And a wish is just a dream you wish to come true”. Maybe it’s just Harry Nilsson’s music. I don’t know, there’s a 100% chance I will never encounter it outside Nora Ephron movies.
Did you say, “Did you read that New York Times piece about cotton tote bags?” to anyone this month? Maybe you should, it makes you feel pretty good. Or it just gives you an intellectual power trip. They’re the same thing really.
Until next time :)
