Hi! This is a bonus edition of The Vibes— if you wanna read some slightly more thought through thoughts about Lorde + Sally Rooney, you can do that here :)
Okay! Met Gala Thoughts incoming!!
I spent my morning on Tuesday watching the live stream and I can tell you it was worth it purely because Keke Palmer (who did a great job hosting) said “We got James Corden at the bottom of the carpet— I *looved* him in Into The Woods, honey, I’m about to fan out” and then when interviewing him, “Another amazing thing you did, outside of Into The Woods, was getting the Friends cast back together again” !! Can you believe anyone has thought about Into The Woods in the past 6 years?!
And I think it’s worth noting that fashion is subjective and I know that I tend to appreciate things that are slightly more minimal (you know we’re anti-trying on this side) so you’re not gonna see any of the big + bold looks over here! I also (after watching The First Monday in May documentary last week) really was keeping in mind the theme of American fashion when looking at all the outfits. So, on saying that, here are my top looks—
A Lorde + Bode link up is really gonna get me. I’m sorry! I can’t help what I like! And in this case, it’s everything except the waistline of the skirt! I just very rarely like a beneath the belly button rise especially when there’s little shape to the skirt, it doesn’t really do any favours. However I do love an open shirt and she and Emily Bode managed to work to the theme by the fact that Emily Bode is American and through the use of pressed pennies and other American embellishments on vintage silk to create the ethereal looking outfit that still manages to fit this year’s theme. Promise I’ll try and shut up about Lorde now :)
The best-dressed man of the evening, on reflection, has to be ASAP Rocky. I think it’s probably the most in line with the theme and exhibition, he worked with an American designer—Eli Russel Linnetz of ERL—and the main quilted piece, made by a young quilter, is composed of a vintage quilt and pieces from Linnetz’s father and his own wardrobe.
Worth noting that the Met’s exhibition also opens with this quote from Jesse Jackson—
America is not like a blanket—one piece of unbroken cloth, the same color, the same texture, the same size. America is more like a quilt—many patches, many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven and held together by a common thread
—which only makes the look make more sense in my eyes. And while Rihanna’s Balenciaga look didn’t do a whole lot for me in comparison to her other Met fits (though she still looked great) I think they complimented each other far better than any other couple on the red carpet.
A personal favourite is Josh O’Connor in Dunhill designed by Connor McKnight. I know it’s kind of simple but I love that tone of blue and the mirroring of the trimming on the jacket to create what looks like a cross between lace and tuxedo shirt pleats on the shirt works well for me. I had recently discovered Connor McKnight’s designs over NYFW and became kind of obsessed so this could be one of those things that came around at the exact right time for me to appreciate it.
Also really liked Lee Pace’s Thom Browne look. There was a bit of Browne on the carpet (an easy choice) but I think Pace pulled it off the best, I loved that the white cardigan on the carpet made it look like the shirt was cropped at the hip. However, I do think I prefer the suit he wore in the fittings?? I think?? See below!
I have to say that while I Did Not Like the little green baby that Frank Ocean brought along, I surprisingly really loved the ‘Dreamcore’ cap he wore (not just because it covered the green hair), it felt on theme in a direction that no one else took it. On the actual outfit, I was on the side of really loving his Camp look so this isn’t near that for me but still fine!
On the I Thought They Looked Good But Only Tenuously On Theme Or Not At All team:
Closest we get to the theme here is Tessa Thompson with a cool braided cowboy hat (maybe also the fact that Kaia is wearing Oscar de la Renta) but they all look great so I guess it doesn’t matter! On Zoë Kravitz— find me continuing to think about the header pic!!
The Vibes Are Off On:
I will scream if anyone says Timothee Chalamet was well dressed!!! Not only did he wear DROP CROTCH tracksuit pants (famously Pro Hard Pant over here), he also mismatched designers (Haider Ackermann, Rick Owens, Converse) so wasn’t able to put together a consistent look. I hate the cropped jacket with the skivvy peeking out the back in different tones of white. I am ultimately fine with the Converse because they are iconic American shoes. Timmy— if you’re co-chair you gotta pull it out! Do something interesting!!
While I’m sure Horse Girls across the nation felt seen by Kim Petras in Collina Strada I am firmly anti-horses and cannot support this. Great that it’s an up and coming American designer and sure it’s the Met Gala and someone’s gotta be a bit kooky but this is not it!! The thing is— I *get* Collina Strada’s overall Vibe (Lorde’s after-party look was good!) the problem is that I’m sure these horse heads are going to murder someone in their sleep!! I cannot support that!!
It feels as if Dan Levy was upset he didn’t get invited to 2019’s Gala for Notes on Camp and tried to retrofit this theme to that one. I generally really like Loewe and Jonathan Anderson’s designs but this was just kind of gaudy and there was simply too much going on. I do actually like that the top is a polo shirt and the embroidery of the map over the top of the men kissing (inspired by art from David Wojnarowicz) but the sleeves, sequins, pants and (especially) the boots are all too bad for that to balance out.
I’ll let someone else say what I think about the AOC dress—
These were just the looks I had strong feelings about! There are plenty more I liked and much more I didn’t but Substack is warning me that the email is getting close to too long. I do think it’ll be interesting to see if we get any copycats or direct response to the reception of the clothes next year when the theme’s exactly the same.
I’ll see you on the 30th for October’s Ten Vibes!
Until then :)
